Quinn the Eskimo (The mighty Quinn)

Here's how it played out, as the draft wore on, we kept looking ahead at who needed a QB, and who the Browns would need to get ahead of to get Quinn before it got to a team who actually wanted him. This got more exciting when ESPN reported that the Browns were making calls to see what it would cost them. As the situation progressed, we kept going back and forth listening to ESPN and to WKNR. Things got a little more nerve racking when Kenny Rhoda and Tony Rizzo started saying how this was the longest it has ever taken a GM to come out of the war room and talk to the media about their first round pick, leading them to believe they were really trying hard and something must be going on.

As the time was running out on Dallas, with KC who must be trading Trent Green to Miami, (If there is another explanation for them passing on Brady I'd love to hear it), possibly in need of a QB Rick gives up and decides they must want too much. It literally happened like this, "I don't even want him now!" instantly the red trade sign flashed on the screen and was replaced by the Browns helmet. I turned around looked at him in amazement and declared, "You are the Anti-Christ." All of you Browns backing Notre Dame lovers can thank him for deciding to go the other way and not want Quinn. Now if he can just pray for Quinn and Thomas TO get hurt.

As many know I love Charlie Frye, but this I can accept. I like Frye because he's a Zip, but I wanted him to succeed so badly because he grew up a Browns fan his hero was Bernie Kosar, well it appears the same can be said for Quinn which will make him more than just a jersey to me. I can't imagine these two guys,, (Frye & Quinn), doing anything but working their asses off to turn this franchise around.

I believe that the Browns gave up a fair amount to land Quinn. They moved up 14 spots giving up their 2nd round pick and next year's 1st round pick. That pick might not have matter much to Crennel and Savage, figuring that one if not both of them are gone if they have another disappointing season. Besides if they are marginally better next year, they don't get a top 5 pick. This year they get 2 guys rated in the top 5 and only have to pay one of them a contract that reflects it. Savage was impressive last year moving down to get Kamerion Wimbley who was better than Baltimore's pick Haloti Ngata. This year he was incredible getting this deal done.

I cannot imagine the roller coaster Quinn went through with his emotions. I hope things turned out the best for everyone. All he has to do is play during this contract in a way that reflects where he should have been taken and the Browns will be throwing more money at him in a few years. While the Dolphins are afraid to take the keys to Miami away from Marino, Quinn has an opportunity to step up and own this city.

Ev'rybody's building the big ships and the boats,
Some are building monuments,
Others, jotting down notes,
Ev'rybody's in despair,
Ev'ry girl and boy
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here,
Ev'rybody's gonna jump for joy.
Come all without, come all within,
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn.

A few thoughts...

The Browns basically got 2 1st rd studs this year for 2 1st rd picks and an early 2nd (which you might as well consider a late late 1st rd). If both don't work out, they shot themselves in the foot for a few years to come. If they both work out (I think Thomas will be solid despite concerns of OL injuries; I think Quinn will be a good QB, but not the stud that Brady or Peyton is, but then again who is?) the Browns will become a playoff team in 2 years.

The problem I see with the deal is that they likely will be 6-10 or worse next year and would have had a chance at the top QB next year, or could have drafted Beck (BYU), Stanton (Mich St), or another highly ranked QB.

Theres a learning curve with QBs that might be steepest of any position, and so Quinn isn't gonna be all-pro next year. That being said, I think they let Frye take the reins into the season with a few possible outcomes: 1) he excels and keeps the job for another year; 2) he excels and gets traded for a mid-level draft pick; 3) he sucks and is benched halfway through a 3-13 season for Quinn. Any way it shakes out, Quinn gets some time without landing on his tummy each play.

As for Dylan (and Manfred Mann):
I like to do just like the rest,
I like my sugar sweet,
But guarding fumes and making haste
It ain't my cup of meat.

Looking ahead ... Who are the QB prospects next year? It's a much deeper RB class (Hart, McFadden, dude from Rutgers, etc ...).

I've made no secret of my desire to get Thomas vs. my love for Quinn and Notre Dame. This was a best-case scenario in my world.

My Mom always said that Rick was the devil - don't forget that it was Rick that singlehandedly turned around the Browns/Jets double overtime playoff game by openly rooting for Mark Gastineau in the dog pound.

Lastly, a lot of people also said that Wright from UNLV has first round talent so I believe they nailed three first rounders over the weekend.
